France to Inaugurate Greenland Consulate Next Month
Speaking to media, Barrot said the decision is meant to “mark our willingness to deepen our presence in all dimensions” in Greenland, an autonomous region of Denmark that has drawn heightened interest from Washington. His remarks confirm that a permanent mission will be established in Nuuk, the capital, far sooner than previously indicated by the Foreign Ministry, which had only planned to dispatch an envoy next month to scout potential sites.
The move comes as geopolitical friction intensifies over Greenland’s future. On Sunday, Donald Trump declared that the United States must "acquire" Greenland to block Russia or China from gaining influence. He has previously described ownership of the island as an "absolute necessity" for U.S. economic security, comparing it to a "large real estate deal."
Greenland, a self-governing territory within the Kingdom of Denmark, is strategically positioned in the North Atlantic and rich in untapped mineral resources. Both Denmark and Greenland have rejected any proposals to sell the territory, reaffirming Danish sovereignty.
Barrot has sharply criticized Washington’s posture, urging an end to what he termed political “blackmail.” He emphasized that “Greenland is a European territory under NATO protection” and insisted that no justification exists for U.S. intervention.
Beyond serving the six French nationals currently registered in Greenland, the consulate will carry broader strategic weight. It is expected to facilitate scientific research and support French companies seeking investment opportunities in the resource-rich region.
With the opening, France will join a limited circle of nations maintaining permanent diplomatic missions on the island, alongside the United States and, soon, Canada.
