Indonesia President vows swift recovery in flooded Sumatra
Speaking during a plenary Cabinet meeting in Jakarta, Prabowo acknowledged that restoring the provinces could take several months. "Perhaps the regions will return to normalcy in two or three months," he said, emphasizing that the government is working diligently to rebuild the affected areas.
He noted that most roads have already been repaired and announced plans to construct 2,000 temporary and permanent housing units. The government has also deployed 1,000 pieces of heavy equipment, including excavators, clean water tanks, portable toilets, and Bailey bridges.
In addition, 60 helicopters and multiple planes are delivering humanitarian aid daily.
Indonesia’s National Disaster Mitigation Agency reported that as of Monday, the floods and landslides had claimed 1,030 lives, left 206 people missing, and affected millions across 52 districts and cities in Aceh, North Sumatra, and West Sumatra. Infrastructure damage includes 186,488 homes, 1,600 public buildings, 219 healthcare facilities, 967 schools, 434 places of worship, and 290 office buildings.
Separately, Sri Lanka continues to struggle with the aftermath of Cyclone Ditwah, which struck on November 17, with the death toll reaching 643 and 183 people still missing, according to local disaster authorities.
